Snow day

Looks peaceful, doesn't it.  Took this at 7:00 a.m.  Michigan State Police are advising motorists to stay off the roads due to blizzard-like conditions with blowing snow.  All our schools are closed, and even the Library and the District Court are closed.  Me, I'm staying home.  Y'all be safe!

Chicken Tuesday Number Two

A chicken is like a scaredy-cat, right?  That'll be me.  My sister draws a W with her fingers and whips it at me like some people do to "give the finger" only she's got 3 fingers up to make a W ... and she says that I'm a wus.  I've wanted to blog about this before, but I have no idea how to spell wus.  Now I'm not scared of everything, it's just that I'm a wimpy kind of girl who never did like gym class cuz I always got hurt.  But my sister, well she's athletic, and beautiful, and did I mention athletic?  So I don't go for family river-raft rides, nor do I care to ride ferris wheels, and I CERTAINLY don't want to bungie jump!  So I am a chicken, and dang proud of it, cuz I'm 55 years old and doggone it, I get to be me.  If I can't be myself at 55, when IS it my turn?

Okay.  That's my chicken Tuesday, which I am posting while it is still Monday but just barely, because I want to call it a night (because I'm a wus) and a bunch of people already have their chicken tuesdays posted, and if there's one thing I'm NOT a-scared to do, it's type on a dang computer!

Buck, buck, buck, bwaaaaack!!!  G'night all.

Wait a Minute!

If you don't like the weather in Michigan -- Wait A Minute!

Melting all that snow and ice today.  Rain tonight.

Then we get another cold front on Tuesday.

http://www.wzzm13.com/weather/forecast/weather.asp

Quote from the above link (because I think the link is generic, not date-specific):

Monday was a milder day across West Michigan as temperatures soared into the 40s after starting the day in the teens. Some morning sunshine gave way to cloudy skies and eventually some afternoon rain showers.

Monday night look for rain showers through the night, amounting to around 0.25" inland and up to 0.50" along the lakeshore north of I-96. Temperatures will slip into the mid 30s inland and upper 30s along the lakeshore. Winds will be breezy from the south at 10-20 mph inland and 12-22 mph along the lakeshore.

Tuesday will feature scattered rain showers, especially during the afternoon, and mild temperatures once again climbing into the 40s. A very strong cold front will slice across Lower Michigan after sunset touching off a few isolated thunderstorms. Winds will be south at 8-16 mph inland and 10-18 mph along the lakeshore.

Tuesday night will feature an abrupt change once the cold front moves through: temperatures will rapidly drop from the upper 30s and low 40s into the low 20s before midnight. Rain will rapidly change to snow and accumulate 1-3" inland and 3-6" along the lakeshore by midday Wednesday. Winds will turn to the west and increase to 20-30 mph inland and 25-35 mph along the lakeshore. Road conditions will become treacherous during the evening.

Wednesday will feature much colder conditions with morning snowfall followed by mostly cloudy skies during the afternoon. Temperatures will remain in the mid teens to near 20°. Winds will be west at 15-25 mph inland and 20-30 mph along the lakeshore. Wind chills will drop to around 5-10 above.

Temperatures moderate quickly into the upper 20s Thursday with partly cloudy skies.

A developing storm system in the Lower Mississippi Valley will bring moderate to heavy snow to the area starting late Thursday night through much of Friday. Heaviest snow will fall over central and eastern Lower Michigan but West Michigan is likely to significant amounts as well. Temperatures will reach the upper 20s.

Saturday and Sunday will be partly cloudy with temperatures in the low to mid 30s.

The 6-10 Day Outlook for Sunday, February 3 through Thursday, February 7 calls for above average temperatures and above average precipitation. Average highs are around 30-31° with average precipitation of .26" and average snowfall of 2.2".

The 8-14 Day Outlook for Tuesday, February 5 through Monday, February 11 calls for above average temperatures and above average precipitation. Average highs are around 30-31° with average precipitation of .35" and average snowfall of 3.1".

Have a terrific Tuesday!

Picture Perfect -- Around the World

The idea of this week's theme is that you look around you and snap a photo of something that is Unique to your part of the world. Look at your world through the eyes of those of us in other lands.

Every part of the world is unique, whether you live in an isolated village in Africa or big city suburbia in America. What you think is common may well be very peculiar to someone on the other end of the globe - or even in the next town, so have fun with this!

The theme this week is:

'Around the world'

This photo was taken last spring with my Canon Powershot A520.

Chicken and Noodles

This is an easy recipe.  Can tell you from memory.

My family prefers chicken thighs, but you can use a whole chicken, cut up ... or any parts you prefer.  This even works perfectly if the chicken is still frozen!  I've started it as a last minute plan several times that way and it comes out very good!

Spray Pam in bottom of a 9 x 12 cake pan.  I usually use a glass one, but metal works fine, too.  Place the chicken pieces in the coated pan.  Sprinkle with Lawrys salt, curry powder, garlic powder, and turmeric.  Add a little water to the pan (but don't rinse the seasonings off the chicken).  Bake uncovered at 350 till the juices run clear.

Remove the chicken from the pan and place in another oven-safe dish & put it back in the oven but turn the oven off.  This is just to keep it warm while you make the noodles.

(Well, you don't actually MAKE the noodles -- what you do is PREPARE the noodles.)

Pour the chicken broth into a saucepan.  Taste the broth to see if you should add a little salt.  Put some uncooked noodles into the broth (enough to come up to whatever level the broth is at -- just so there's a little more liquid than there are noodles).  Cook the noodles in the broth.

That's all there is to it.  Also prepare a vegetable or salad or both, and maybe open a can of cranberry sauce to serve with the meal, or else some other fruit to be the dessert.

This is COMFORT food!  Very nummy!

Stupid old quote

"Everybody talks about the weather.  Nobody does anything about it."

More quotes from Mom & Dad

Mom's reply when I asked her how she gets Dad to do things he obviously doesn't really want to do:

"Well he LOVES me, Rani."

Dad's reply when I asked HIM how Mom gets him to do things he doesn't really want to do:

"Oh, she just talks about it and talks about it until I think it's my idea."

My mom used to say ...

"If you don't bother to vote, then you aren't allowed to gripe."

My dad used to say ...

"I may not agree with a word that you say ... but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

(He was probably quoting somebody else, but it had a big impact on me as a child.)

Thanks, Dad!

Research and Think for Yourselves!

I've read a coupla blogs about a certain candidate for president who's supposedly a radical Muslim who won't say the pledge of allegiance and got sworn into office on the Quran instead of the Bible and supposedly this is verified at Snopes.com.

So I went to Snopes.com on my own (not through a link).

And the tale is not true.

Snopes.com checks the facts on "urban legends."  You can go there yourself, and look up whatever you've read in round-robin email or whatever about all kinds of things.

Do your homework, kids, and THINK.  Thanks, Rani

If you know how to pray -- tell a child

The news online tonite is bothering me so much:  Some lady killed her children and even though a teacher had reported the family to Protective Services, nothing happened in time to save the children.  Some man threw his children off a bridge.  A marine killed his girlfriend and her unborn child.  Near where I live, a police officer whose wife had a restraining order against him snuck into his house & waited for his kids to leave and then killed his wife.

Seems like a lot of this goes on.  Seems like we need more angels!  And maybe too many people don't even know they can pray.

If you know how to pray, tell a child.  A long time ago, most children at least knew about prayer.  I don't think enough kids even know anymore.  If you know how to pray, even if you don't do it often enough -- please, tell a child!

Thanks.
